Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.

Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Police then discovered many other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state early analysis indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A senior representative said the attack left him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
