The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
