Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
